Withut going into detail, the name says it all.

If you are going to work with the PC at home and never connect to a business network then Home is fine.

If you are going to work in a business environment, where more network connectivity is required, then go for Pro.

But to be honest you will hardly notice much difference if you just use it for general computing.

The difference between the two is pretty much what it says on the tin, The home edition is full of extra little programs that would be of more use to the home user, the professional edition is more biased towards the IT Professional and business user, which means it has diagnostic programs and networking tools, and less in the way of fun features. There are other versions too, such as Media Center Edition which has a special function for use with computers that have multimedia functions such as DVD recording, TV, CD players and a Radio, this is based on Home. There is also the 64-Bit edition that was rewritten to make the best of the new generation dual core 64-Bit processor equipped computers.
