I Need A Dongle

I currently have VM Broadband and I am happy with it.

However, the flat that I am moving to hasn't got broadband and I would be getting it set up nearer the time that I move in.

Meantime I will take my spare laptop to the flat and it has been suggested that I buy a dongle.
Does that little thing actually do the same as my VM router?

Can anyone suggest a dongle that I could buy? Do I have to get a contract or can I get PAYG?

A broadband 4G dongle will connect you to the internet in the same way a smartphone connects. Can you tether your laptop to your phone? No cable requured

My phone couldn't do that. Neither of us is smart.

I was hoping that I could just plug it in like a memory stick. It won't be in constant use.

The problem is that there is too much going on in my head and nothing is being decided. It's giving me a headache.

You need something like this but shop around forca good pay as you go or monthly rolling contract https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1401550?clickPR=plp:4:11
If you have an android smartphone (not iPhone) open settings, wifi & internet.
If you can see Hotspot and tethering click on it and click WiFi hotspot to turn it on.
Now your laptop will be able to find and connect. It really is easy once you know how

Thanks, I will have a good look at it later.

I bought a basic Alcatel flip phone because my hands shake too much to use the touch screen on my last phone.

I will check out and see if it is capable of linking to the internet. New technology is actually starting to make me feel old. :-)
Am I missing something?
How can you connect to your phone’s wifi if there is no local broadband?
For 4g you need a data allowance and unless you have an unlimited data allowance it soon gets swallowed
These days you can get excellent deals for cheap 4G data on monthly rolling contracts. Lots of people find it cheaper to get their home broadband than the traditional way and use mifi routers for the SIM card.
Some examples here https://www.moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/sim-only/unlimited-data-sim-only/

It sounded so simple. I will just wait until nearer my moving date and just get broadband installed.

Thanks for taking time to help Barry and ichkeria.

Moving house is harder than I remember.
You turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot Ick. Effectively you are using the 4/5g from your phone and using the phone as a 'fifi router'.

Many other things have their own Wifi. My alarm for instance has one, nothing to do with the wifi from my Synology.
