Windows XP Movie Maker & Canon MV20

I have inherited a MV20 canon DV camera and I am trying to connect it to my PC using an IEEE1394 connector and use xp movie maker.
Problem is when I try to capture a video off the camera the captured video is all disrupted and not clear at all (it is on the screen on the camera) does xp movie maker not work with this can anyone help

Do you mean it's all jerky and the sound is stuttery?
If so, it sounds like either the codec you're using to capture is hogging CPU or your PC just isn't fast enough. Either can cause dropped frames which will appear as above.
Try capturing to uncompressed AVI 5 mins at a time. I captured 30 mins worth once and it turned out to be a whopping 6Gb!! 5 mins at a time is about 1Gb which is more manageable.
Then you can compress the AVI afterward with DivX or XVid or whatever.
