After using windows xp for around 10 years I'm finding windows 10 difficult to navigate but I suppose I'll get there in the end. My problem at the moment is that along the bottom of the screen ,next to the start button (icon)is a blank section with "type here to search". When I click on it I can't type, nothing,no flashing cursor.Any help welcomed

I get a flashing vertical line, not a cursor as such, is that there?

no
That little box is the Microsoft digital assistant Cortana. It looks like it is not enabled on your system so try this.

Press the Windows key + S simultaneously to open Cortana.
Click the Notebook button. It's the little notebook icon underneath the house icon on the left side of your screen.
Click on Settings.
Click on the On/Off switch underneath the Hey Cortana heading.

hi. There's no house or notebook on the left side of the screen.Only messenger, whats app, search, flow, speed dial, bookmarks, personal and history.
When you press the windows key and S does a panel open up that has a top row menu that reads...

All. Apps. Documents. EMail. Web. More.

If so click More and choose settings.

Otherwise again click just the windows key and from the pop up menu select the cog wheel that denotes settings.
From the menu that now appears click Cortana and then sort out your permissions preferences and enable Cortana with the slide toggles. One important detail is that you will need to set up a free Microsoft account to be able to enable Cortana. Sorry about being late with that info. but I have a Microsoft account and did so before starting to use W10 so the detail slipped past my notice.
Forget Cortana and the search box it is a pain. I changed to Windows 10 and struggled for a couple of weeks but now love it. Use it as you did the previous version and make sure you have the icons of the programs you use on the bottom of the desktop screen you can then go into whatever you need straight away. Hope this helps. Persevere!!!
