Depends what your requirements are. I find Orange quite expensive and vodafone a bit unreliable. I would personly go for o2 or T-mobile as these offer a wide range of tariffs to suit most users. As to what phone to get, i prefer the Nokia models - 8310 in particular because i can listen to the FM radio. But it depends what you intend to use it for.
As for Network it has to be BTCellnet (O2). It is the cheapest and most people have O2 phones. If you are a texting person then it has to be Orange, because they have a range of special offers, e.g. 50 top-up voucher equal texts being 5p, and 15 can get 5 free texts' a day. As for phone it has to be a nokia phone, preferbly Nokia 3310/3330, becasue they are quite cheap easy to use and have lots of feacture to customize your phone like cases, logo and ringtones etc. ...hope it helps
How long is a piece of string? The most important questions to ask are: Coverage where abouts are you (T mobile has the poorest uk coverage) if you have a partner or one other mobile you will be calling a lot get the same network as it as mobile to mobile calls cost a fortune between different networks and as for phones the older (and therefore bigger) the better as they have larger external aerials which tend not to drop as many calls but as the prevoius answer says for cools point nokias have the best covers and other bits and bobs. good luck
