Personally, I would suggest the PSP. I have one, and apart from the relatively small memory (in comparison to the iPod Video) I have no problems with it.

As you said, the PSP is pretty much the best of all worlds - You can put music, videos, pictures on it. You can also buy films in UMD format, and the quality is staggering. You've got games too, which can be a lot of fun. As well as being able to put homebrew games/apps on it (if you keep it at firmware 1.50). However, when you upgrade to 2.0 you get an amazing web-browser as long as you have WiFi in your home.

The iPod Video has a ton of space, 30-60GB, which is more than enough. You don't have to buy the videos from the iTunes Music Store, but if you want to put your own films on you need to convert them into the iPod format, which, unfortunately I don't know. You can get this option with the Pro version of Quicktime, but I am sure there are some freeware applications out there that can convert them.

Personally, from a 17 year old, I would suggest the PSP. Not only does it have all the multimedia options you need, but you can play games and surf the web too.

I hope this helps you, and your son, with your decision.

The PSP doesn't have exciting games at the moment, but that might change soon.
The PSP package contains a tiny memory stick (32MB, that's hardly 10 songs! ) , you can buy a proper one later whenever your finances allow it (they're very expensive)
Also, with a PSP your son can access the www. if there are wireless access points nearby... if that is ok with you ...
