Lumia 640 Vibrates When Vibrate Is Switched Off

Hi I have a Lumia 640. I use it a lot for Messenger. Two evenings ago I was chatting to a regular contact and the phone vibrated with most incoming messages. If the messages arrived quite slowly when the phone had gone into lock screen (set at one minute) it did not vibrate at all and it made the proper sound I have set for it. But if the messages were fast and close together it vibrated every time. I have always had vibrate turned off and it still is ..... or is there something deeper which I do not know about? It is not vibrating on texts or Whatsapp. If anyone can help me with this I would be delighted it is driving me mad. PS I don't know very much about phones
