Been abroad and thought the 'emergency calls only' was because I was out of the country. Now back and the message is still there, the screen is frozen and although i have found lots of advice on how to unfreeze it nothing seems to work. Done all the taking out of sim card/battery, charging, holding power/volume/home buttons - really getting stressed with it now. every so often it rings but I can't swipe it to answer it and can't swipe screen to change settings etc. Just stuck. Obviously getting loads of voicemails too as that keeps making the noise but cannot get into it to find out. Help!

'Emergency calls only' can appear when your service provider thinks that you've got no credit available.

If you're on pay-as-you-go check that you've still got some credit.

If you're on a monthly account contact your service provider to check that it hasn't been de-activated for some reason (e.g. because the payments were coming from an old debit card but you've now got a new one with a different expiry date or security code).

Interesting, I have had a new debit card recently - will check - but would that stop the screen working? Can't slide it up or across.
No, it shouldn't stop the screen from working normally.

See "Your device freezes or has fatal errors" at the top of page 101 of the user manual:

(NB: Only do a factory reset as the very last resort, as it erases everything on your phone!)

Update: after going into a Vodafone shop the not much older than fourteen year old assistant looked at it, asked me for my pin number (didn't even know I had one!) gave him a couple of suggestions and hey presto that was all it needed! Felt very old and very stupid!
