Without knowing who those sources are, it is impossible to know their motives.
It is pretty obvious that this inquiry is being subjected to outside influences. That could be the Establishment, the Security Services or Politicians with something to hide.
The truth is, we will probably never know.

To answer the OP: this is becoming a total car crash. It doesn't reflect well on May, who set it up, but it's doing no better now that she has gone. However, it's impossible to say who might be benefiting from the mess.
