I also find most of the skeleton clues far too cryptic for me, but searching back through the crossword section of AB on late Sunday afternoon/ early evening usually provides most if not all the answers.
It's then just fitting the answers into the grid, I take a copy of the crossword and use that first as quite often I go wrong.
You're right there are some very good solvers out there usually give explanations as well. ;-)
