Talktalk - Connecting Smart Tv

I bought a Samsung Smart Tv a few weeks ago and initially had no problems with it. On Friday my router died - it was an old 3Com model, built like a tank with four ports for Cat cables at the back - none of which I was using at the time. I had an old Talktalk router that I got a few years back when we were having problems with the old router, that I had never actually used. I hooked that up and everything was hunky dory; Smart TV, tablet and two laptops all connected just fine with it.

Meanwhile I had already contacted TalkTalk before I'd realised it was the old router causing connection problems with both WiFi and phone lines. All was resolved when I put the 'new' router in so I rang to tell them I'd solved the problem. They offered me a new router and Youview box and a price reduction for having been a loyal customer. I didn't really want the Youview box, but the router - yes please. They are due to arrive tomorrow

However, this morning I find I can't get the router to connect the Smart TV to the internet. I hadn't changed anything in our setup, but although the WiFi works for tablet and laptops and the TV can get through to the router via WiFi (the router is in the hall, about 2.5 - 3 metres away from the TV), it won't connect from the router to the internet. I've tried resetting the router. I called Talktalk but they didn't seem to be able to help apart from saying the router is old and probably not compatible with the Smart TV - but it worked fine over the weekend.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to try and get things working again please? Hopefully tomorrow the new router will sort things out - but a temporary fix would be great.

//An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.//

I have made a note of all the ip addresses that are currently assigned to my wifi enabled devices.

not so all my devices have to be connected to the router (talk talk )they all need the routers wi fi address which is the same for all
you've lost me all together fella
did you press the smart hub button on the remote to set the router up?
Question Author
Yes Trevor, I've pressed the Smart Hub button.... I've gone into network settings too but get lost round about there. I'm a 'keep pressing buttons until something works' sort of person and 9 times out of 10 it works ;)

I have seen that other answer - I'm beyond that thanks.

I think we are getting confused by the wifi address and password and the IP address which as far as I understand are different.

Sorry - Ivor, not Trevor!

I've tried software update too, Togo.

Taicihi I wait with baited breath the result when you connect up the latest router, what a bind setting up other machines, never mind the tv anomaly. Think about the wifi extender tip in the Ethernet port to remain wireless. I know it is strange, but I trust my source. I gave him his first job after he came out of college with an electronics degree in the 70s. He is still in the business.
If I had to have a stab at guessing the problem it would be Samsungs wifi detector being weak or poor processing, the extender may just negate the problem.

Watch this space Togo! I've got a few other things on tomorrow but you can imagine I'll be on to it as soon as I can.
what i'm taking about togo is the security key thats needed for all the devices you have to connect to the router thats the same number for tablets laptops mobiles
Ta, taichi (that's easy for you to say). I hope it goes OK later.

Ugh - the router/set top box came before 8am! But - same problem.....

I believe it is an IP address problem - now I recall that at one point I had a message saying that more than one device was sharing an IP address. I forgot in all the frustration and stress....

Connecting to the router is no problem, the router just won't let the TV onto the internet.

I have read that turning your router off overnight can help reassign the IP addresses.

Next - I think I can get into the settings on the router more easily with this model.
Gotcha ivor. That code you are talking about is the WPA or WPA 11 key. WiFi Protected Access Key, which supersedes the old WEP key which was not so secure. Think of it as you routers discreet PIN no. You are meant to keep it secret and only allow trusted friends and family to have it. It is possible for someone to access your wifi from outside your premises if they have the key.

Might be worth reading taichi.

That should be better. Choose the ip address fail option and next, it gives a good pictorial walk through.

Looks interesting Togo, but all the settings are already there - I need a new IP address. Thanks, I have to go out for a couple of hours, will trawl through it.
You could try setting DNS to manual in IP settings. Make sure the date and time are correct set on the tv, and when asked for a DNS server no. choose from the list attached. Talk Talks primary server is 62.24.134.1 their secondary server is 62.24.243.2
