Anyone help with this please I am trying to update facebook and messenger on my ipad but it keeps coming up saying unable to download at this time. I have tried several times. So now have none of them both icons are dark and now won't work....

You could try a Reboot...Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Tried that still won't work. I have uninstalled them and reinstalled but keeps saying unable to download. Both icons darkened out cannot use them. Thanks for trying to help me.

I'm assuming you have an Apple iTunes account, yes? Then go into your Settings-->General--> and about halfway down the list is BACKGROUND APP REFRESH. The apps will be listed there... If On then turn off and On again.
