What a fabulous evening - stunning ballet - such a shame that the last 10 minutes was ruined by screening problems - but a great send off for Carlos and he would not have been aware of the problems.

When I lived in London, I went many times to the ROH to see wonderful ballet. I loved every single second of it all. My very first ballet ever was Manon... wow!! I sat behind John Selwyn Gummer(rememeber him?) His specs were sooooo enormous, I could see through them too and it was like watching the ballet through a magnifying glass. Manon, and the ROH ,was my introduction to live ballet and I've been hooked ever since. It's never the same on telly or DVD.

Hi Janbee
I agree nothing can beat actually being in the ROH but this new live screening system for opera and ballet etc in a local venue is pretty good. The cameras are right there on the stage practically, one can see every drop of perspiration! It's the atmosphere that cannot be duplicated. Trouble is I could never afford the ROH in my younger days! I do remember J S Gummer though, pretty neat using his glasses as it were.

Rock... I couldn't afford the tickets either but I had 2 friends (one a well known dancer) who worked at the ROH so I got lots of freebies. I was very very lucky. The ticket prices were , and still are, horrendous.
Nutcracker 1976 .... as a student

one balletomane counted on her fingers and said
That means you have seen Nureyev dance !

I said - yeah - thats the fella !

and she started screaming and telling me how lucky I was etc etc

you can still tout for returns at covent garden
on the evening ( entrance by the market rather than Bow Street )

and just think ....

as you lower your posterior/tush or whatever onto the seat you must muse: " Just think the govt is paying £150 for me to occupy this sseat "

[average cost of the govt subsidy]
