What Is This Strange Box?

I am a complete technophobe and have just enough knowledge of computers to be able to use one in only the simplest way. My computer at work has two speakers, one of which is plugged into the computer's hard drive, while the other is plugged into a square box on the floor beneath my desk. What is this box, please\? Thank you to anyone who is willing to explain this.

When you say "plugged into the computer's hard drive" I assume that you simply mean plugged into the computer.
Probably the square box on the floor is a subwoofer to give better bass response, although from you description that's not entirely clear.
One would normally expect to find three speakers, two of which would be quite small and look similar, except the one would be connected to the computer and the other connected to the first. These would be the left and right stereo speakers, then a third larger one would be the sub-woofer.

For my two speakers - right speaker connects to the computer's audio output and to the power supply (small box on the floor), left speaker connects to right.

The power supply would normally have a light to indicate it has power - mine has a small green light.

Thanks, folks, one speaker is connected to the computer by a thin wire with a small round connection. The other speaker is connected to the box on the floor by a similar thin wire and connection, but also by a heavy cable and a larger plug-in connection. Both the speakers are quite small and there seems to be no third speaker, just this box on the floor. I will probably never know.
