Messaging On Ipad Mini

When someone messages me, why do I get two alerts, a bit like a snooze button on an alarm clock? Can I change it? I get all excited thinking I have two messages but there is only one, aah.

If you go into Settings, notification centre and then messages, right at the bottom there's a bit where you can change the number of alerts you get. But it's repeat alerts, so if it says 1, you will be told about the message twice, IYSWIM. Set it to none and you will get told once about each message.
