I have been watching this morning and two flights crossed each other approx. directly overhead of my house, but one going east and the other one going west.
One was flying at 36,000 and the other 37,000 !

If they were in the same position, is 1000 feet enough to separate the two flights ?

it seems that 1000 feet is the minimum acceptable height difference between commercial airliners.

See under Vertical Separation (FL290) is 29.000' The might not have been exactly over each other though - there is a delay on that website and it`s not as accurate as ATC http://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/Separation_Standards

On a flight last year, I felt the aircraft jolt slightly. I looked out of the window to the rear and saw an aircraft which, when both planes were at their closest point, was MUCH closer than 1000ft. We must have flown through the wake of its engines which causes the jolt. I hate to think we were any closer!

I couldn't help noticing how all the corporate jets started concealing their registration marks, a year or so ago and many conceal their departure point and destination as well, now. A sad reflection on the state of the world.

This is normal. If you look at the blue diagram you will see RVSM (reduced vertical separation minima) which is now applied in many countries though not yet all.

hypo I know ;-)) I don't know how it's got stuck on Menorca (although I'm open about going there a lot).I always have to move it back to my home location but when i open it again next time it's still back in the Balearics!!
