I have a colour photo that I want to get enlarged and converted to Black & White.  Is there any free software that allows colour photos to be converted?

Well, I use IrfanView to edit and sample pictures. It's a no-frills program, and you can use to easily re-size and resample photos, red-eye reduction and, using the colour enhancing options, you can make images black and white if you choose to (with various sliders and options).

It's a completely free program and doesn't have any nasty malware hidden inside it like a lot of free programs do. I've also found it very easy to use, and I'm useless when it comes to image manipulation, so try it out, you've got nothing to lose.

You can download it by going to http://www.irfanview.com
...hmmm....I can only endorse Mobius1's words.......it will do what you want and so much more ...commoner
Check out Serif's website. They usually give away older versions of their software eg Photoplus.

Do some searching and just check for "desaturate" as a filter or colour modding option.

OR you can scan the photo in selecting "black and white photo" in the scanning settings!

OR print it and set the printer settings to greyscale, no-colour or whatever is applicable to your printer.

Easy!

As well as the brilliant IrfanView already mentioned I also have FastStone and Picasa2 - all will do the job and all are free.
Just take it into "Boots" or whoever does photographic work round your neck o the woods...It'll be cheaper in the long run....;-)
