I have recently received an email from my broadband supplier Virgin telling me to "Just push the button to tell us if I want to be supercharged, up to 50Mb broadband and don't forget, it's all on us. So why wait? Get your faster broadband."

Is it safe to proceed, because why do they go to this trouble, why not just increase the speed automatically?

If a seller asked if I wanted to be supercharged I'd assume they were referring to the bill !
I have Virgin and they recently sent me a new Super Hub(free) and I now have 50mb b/band whereas before it was slower than a snail. Now, it's faster than a speeding bullet.
You can check it out here AOG.

It could be a Scam and hitting the button could link your Computer to a site other than Virgin. I would be telephoning Virgin to ask if the e/mail is genuine.

I think this is the link that dannyk intended for you. :-

Some time ago, I had one of these emails and went for it. But, do not click on any links in the email (just in case!). Navigate to your Virgin Media A/C, log in and navigate to your details and you should find an option to upgrade the speed for free.

The caveat is that you may need to 'upgrade' Virgin's box/router at your end and they might make a fee for this, but they will state the price. My memory's failing fast but I believe I got the first speed upgrade free and the second I had to pay a small amount for a better router.
They ask you because accepting commits you to a new contract period, probably 12 months but could be more.

This of course ties you to Virgin for another year unless you pay a hefty to cancel, should you which to.
This email from Virgin is genuine.

I was recently upgraded for free on Virgin cable from 60mbps to 100mbps.

Also if they upgraded you without telling you then people might not realise they have been upgraded and it is, of course, good publicity for Virgin if you can tell your friends you have been upgraded by Virgin for free.
You need to be connected to Virgin by cable, not a landline. If you are, then good luck to you.

Thank you for all your answers, I went into my on-line account and did it from there, so it looks as if it was legit.
