Morning, Baldric.....quiet Christmas for you too......MrsB back now?

Hi gness, yes, back Sat. 1600ish, no probs.
When I go away the house is never empty.

I woke up this morning and the front was open, not unlocked, actually open. Anyone could have come in. I'm sure the guilty person will deny it.

I live alone, Ummmm so that doesn't work for me...but what was interesting in the article is that insurance companies are looking at whether those who have been burgled have "advertised" an empty house through social media...x
This sort of thing has been happening for many years, long before the internet - burglars check the obituary notices in the local newspapers to see when funerals are being held.
You could even assume that people might read your stuff on here ... or notice that you're not posting at all for a while.

We are, perhaps, not quite as anonymous as we think.

My front door was left wide open the other day, the dog was delighted as he got to lay in the porch, my dad got a ***...
People are daft if they do that leaving an empty house. I think they just get over excited about their holidays. Personally I hate travelling so don't get excited until I'm at my destination.

I do know that, Hc....undertakers will tell you when arranging a funeral to leave someone in the house if possible.

I was always careful in the newsagent when I was cancelling my papers for a holiday....but as Dave says...many of us talk about holiday plans on here.... and there is a much wider audience on the internet...x
But you have a dog the size of a shed, rocky. I suspect potential burglars may have thought at least twice ...
I posted this on Prudie's thread by way of agreement

jno jnr and bride are honeymooning, and both have sworn off FB and Twitter while away, for precisely the reason VHG mentions: it's not a good idea to tell the world your house is empty.

I used to know a newspaper columnist who always wrote extra columns in advance to have published while he was away on holidays, because he didn't want the paper to aplogise for his absence by saying "McGillicuddy is away for three weeks". Same reason.

But even you, Ummmm have mentioned when you have both being going to spend a day in say.... Birmingham......without saying there will be someone in your house.

Many have said on here where they will be spending Christmas....in a chatty way.

So it can be done in all innocence without necessarily being daft....
Facebook posts aren't broadcast to everyone, only your 'friends'. I suppose you could be burhpgled by your friends but this would be an indication that something rather more serious was wrong with your life. A (very sad) stranger doing a random search for pics of people on holiday would have no way of knowing where you lived.
I have a friend that tells the world when she's away, god alone knows how she hasn't been burgled. We don't even tell many people down the pub as you never know who's listening, sad but true. Day to day I'm not bothered as the hound is there and he'll let no one in and I'm pretty certain some have tried.
I was appalled a few years back when I went into the newsagent to cancel my papers over a holiday, only to have the lady behind the desk comment loudly "where are you off to, then?".....

My neighbour believes in telling everyone that they are away, on the principle that everyone in the street will know the house is empty, and look out for anything unusual. That's one way of looking at it.
Burhpgled is an actual word, apparently. But it should have been 'burgled'.
Trouble is Zac, if anyone comments on your post, then it is broadcast to loads of people you're not friends with.
It's more obvious, I'd have thought, when we are out at work all day - the cars are missing, too!
Still, how would they know where you live?
