Microsoft doesn't do spell-checking but some of its software might. Which program(s) are you referring to? Internet Explorer? Word? Publisher?
Sorry! I must learn to read! (I've now noticed that you're referring to Word) I'll try to post a solution shortly.
with Word 2010 in the options is a language section in which you can set the default editing language to English (U.K.)

Erm, have you got Windows set to UK English via Control Panel?

One other suggestion. It depends on what version of Office you're using. My ancient, but still perfectly functioning thanks, copy of Office 2003 needs you to do this:

Start Menu
All Programs
Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office Tools
Microsoft Office Language Settings
Select English (UK) and click "Add"
In the right-hand box, select English (US) and click Remove.

Worth a try if you're still having problems.
