AVG is free and works for most people.

Norton and Macafee not free, but fairly inexpensive and work ditto.

Panda Titanium stops just about everything - and comes with a firewall. I can't praise it enough, plus brilliant support should you need it.

I meant to have added that the best of the free anti-virus is reckoned to be what all the previous posters have said - AVG.

Have a look at www.avast.com. I swapped out AVG for this product.

AVG has a good record but a number of my friends have reported problems with the recent version (7?). I had some problems with McAfee but am happily using both Norton (latest version can be had for �19.99) and Anti-vir (free)....not on the same computer of course.
