Tried in vain to rid laptop of bug thats causing both IE/Chrome Browsers to freeze and deny input from keyboard and then display "11111111111..... in the search box. Also you get Y} added on - if that helps to identify.
Ive been through a gamut of malware cleanups but Im holding out for a solution barring a Vista rescrub.

methyl seems to have suggested the most likely cause. Check the 1 key. Doesn't suggest malware to me unless it's failed malware. You could try reinstalling browsers, but to be honest both corrupting at once seems unlikely.

I didnt press either keys and also when using Chrome the Find search box comes up of its own accord. Something strange afoot

You could try reinstalling the system from a date before the issue started.
