Laptop Keeps Freezing

A few months ago, my laptop started freezing sometimes when I connect to the internet (I've tried waiting for it to go away - I've waited hours before).

I've done a virus scan with Avira and Malwarebytes, defragged, and cleaned the registry, but it still happens. Short of buying a new laptop, I don't know what to do.

Can anyone help, or is this machine simply at death's door?

Chrome.
What windows OS are you on?
How old is your laptop?
Laptop Model and O/S please. HDD capacity and how much space have you got left.
Can you tell us what you mean when you say "connect to the internet" - what do you do in this process?

Forgive the late reply everyone...

I'm on Vista, the laptop is about 6 years old.

Ed: the laptop usually freezes entirely after I have opened my web browser. I've not yet had the problem without doing so. I've tried waiting for it to unfreeze, but it never does - I've waited hours in the past.

The HD capacity is 120 GB. I've got about 35 left.
To unfreeze press Ctrl Alt delete keys together then do System Restore
How much RAM does it have Krom?

6 years old is getting on a bit... Maybe a refresh would do it good. That, or you could upgrade to windows 7 or 8, which are slightly less labour intensive on your system.

Do you use a lot of extensions and plugins for Chrome? Might they be slowing it down?

Question Author
I'm not sure of the RAM off the top of my head. I'll check when I'm back home later on.

tambo: no, I don't use many plugins for Chrome. I've tried Ctrl-Alt-Del, but the computer is just completely frozen.

"Maybe a refresh would do it good"

How do I do that?
Refresh is system restore (SR). Try booting up and keep tapping f8 - that will bring up Safe Mode. Do SR soon as Windows opens
You could also try deleting your temp and history files on a regular basis.
