Poor wireless connection, try moving wireless transmitter/receiver to a different position. Try a different location for the laptop.
If your laptop connects to the internet successfully via an ethernet cable, but not by wi-fi, it's likely that there's interference on the channel being used by your router. You should try changing the channel. If you need instructions you'll have to tell us the make and model of your router.

When you click the network icon on the bottom right of your screen, does it show you as connected to the router?
To access your router's settings, try typing 192.168.0.1 (or possibly http://routerlogin.com/ ) into your browser's address bar and hitting 'Enter'. That should enable you to access the settings. If you find that a password is required, try 'admin'. If you need a password, try 'password'. (Those should be the default requirements). You should then be able to locate the option to change the channel number. (Choose one which is well away from the current one).
