Sometimes the little icon doesn't appear in the bar at the bottom of the screen and without it there's no internet connection at all.

Is there any chance that there's another AV program still on your pc? Some of them are the very devil to uninstall and you think you've managed it but it's still there - Norton, for example. Having two AV programs is very typical of what will slow your pc down.
I use avast and while it updates after start up the computer grinds to a halt. Once I get the pop up saying avast has updated everything is ok and the pc runs normally. It shouldn't stop your internet connection.

There might be some residual bits of Symantec still here. I might try the discs that came with the computer and try to get it back to factory condition.

Thank you both for your answers.
Download the Norton Uninstaller from the Symantec website and run it to completely remove Norton make sure you chose the right one for your version of Norton. This should fix your issue as it seems you didn't use their uninstaller to firstly remove it.
