What version of windows?
You could try a system restore to a date before the error started.

this is the second time round this has happened. It happened about 3 weeks ago after it installed the updates. I did a systems restore back about 3 weeks and managed to rectified it . Today it showed the install of updates again and I did them and the same happened the same as 3 weeks ago. It looks like the fault has caught up over the 3 weeks . I have done a systems restore today but only back to where the fault was . Everything is working ok but when I do these updates same problem is going to start again. They will automatically install when I switch my pc off then I wont be able to get in to anything till I do another systems restore. windows 7.

sorry I forgot to thank you for your reply. I don't know much technically about pcs just what I have picked up from reading replies on here.
Here's someone else with that problem http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Error-Code-8504-104/td-p/444570 (except they have a 32-bit system) and general tenor of that thread is that you're going to have to uninstall/re-install Norton - that page and others given links to https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v62545568_EndUserProfile_en_us?product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1

(I got rid of Norton yonks ago so have never had to deal with that error)
