OK-story so far.I am a Sky customer, old router broke, bought new Sky router from eBay.Connected everything up,just replacing the old router with its power problem for a new, next model up one,no wires or anything changed.PC working fine, small problem with internet speed, but as my other post states, the problem should be sorted within 10 days.

Then I got a phone call last night and the line was hissing and spitting so bad I could hardly hear the person on the other end and vice versa. They even rang me back to see if it was a one off,but the line was still crackling. It would sometimes get better but in general unusable.

I had not used a microfilter before with my old router and I could not remember why, found out with this one, when I use a filter it knocks out the internet altogether!

So it looks as if I can have internet OR phone, but not at the same time.I was very surprised that the filter acted in this way,is there a setting on my router that I should change so I can have phone and internet or have I probably bought a dodgy router?

Any advice would be great, off out for a bit so I will get back to any ideas later-this is driving me MAD!?%!>?

It is a sagemcom model by the way.

Thanks-but please help my sanity

Now this is a major problem, just got back from a nice day out in the snow laden hills of North Wales and put the fire on.Bad smell came out the fire and it blew itself out.Tried to ring British Gas and the phone was unusable.
Used my mobile, but it brought home the dangers of not having the land line there.
Please,any ideas?
Thanks
Aya
I would try another filter, Aya. They do go wrong.

Thanks for that Idea, tried the old filter that we had stored in a box and the new filter that came with the router. No change.
But thanks for the idea!

As you bought the router from ebay and not sky, I'm wondering if it's not compatible or just not working properly, I'm sure I read somewhere that there routers are proprietary (if that's a word, but you know what I mean).
Sorry 'their'!

Quick update, rang Sky and they tested the line and got me to test another phone and stuff, and we have an engineer coming out tomorrow. The lovely woman I spoke to said if there was a fault on the phone line, broadband was the first to suffer and it was amazing that I was getting anything at all.

As for the filter,OH rummaged around the back of the unit everything is kept on and found...a filter!!No wonder the one I was fitting was causing problems.Sky put it there for some reason and we had both forgotten about it,so at least that is one problem solved, and hopefully another tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help,I will let you know what happens.

Now that is a great idea methyl.
He still does not know what is wrong,he can see by just looking at the line it was hanging on by a nail so he has replaced that.He went to the exchange box,all is well there,so for now because the line is in such a mess, all the way from the top of the pole to our box, that is getting replaced. One of the big 'cherry picker' type vans is needed and that is coming tomorrow.

It seems that the problem could be wear and tear on the actual line,no wonder all the ideas we came up with where not working!

I am tempted to change to Virgin now though,I was told yesterday that I am going over my internet limit 2 months in a row(didn't even know I was limited) and may be automaticly upgraded-at a cost of £7.50 per month!!!The only thing that was keeping me with Sky was the, what I thought, was the unlimited usage.
Oh well

I will keep you all updated.
Thanks again
Aya
