We are constantly advised to have a security program installed on our computers ( I have MSE which I find very good, straightforward and don't notice it's there until its needed). I don't see the same recommendations for appliances such as the iPhones, iPad, other smartphones etc. why is that please? Is it not necessary on those appliances or are we being careless?

If you haven't jailbroken your iPad, you should feel safe and secure that your iPad is virus-clean and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future. There are no known iOS viruses that can infect an iPad or iPhone that has not been jailbroeken. Furthermore, Apple's app approval process also ensures that each app is checked for possible malware, granting an additional level of security.

There is an Anti-virus App available for the iPad / IPhone in the iTunes store called VirusBarrier which could be useful for detecting virus infected downloaded files that could be potentially sent on to others via email etc.
