I think the Top Level Domain naming strategy is loosely based on the ISO3166 two letter code. Not entriely sure what this is based on, but I think it is how the native language might abbreviate its own country's name (eg De - Deutschland - Germany). I could be completely wrong about that though.

The country's name in Arabic is 'Al Djazair'.
