Steepletone players, any good ?

My other 'alf has been desperate for a way to copy his vinyl & cassettes to CD, & did in fact buy a turntable but has never got on with it for some reason.

I've seen a couple of Steepletone 5-in-1 players that look ideal, the Memphis & the SMC386. Are they any good ? I know I'd have to get a subwoofer to improve the sound. The specs look pretty much the same other than one has a remote, other is slightly bigger, but they're about the same price. Any recommendations ?

The name of Steepletone brings back bad memories of the 70's. One of my friends had a Steepletone "Hi-fi" system. the speakers were so cheap and light-weight, we had to put empty Newcastle Brown beer bottles on them to stop them floating away.

On a more serious note, its hardly likely that they will be of any good quality at all, so don't expect hi-fi performance.

I've seen similar comments in reviews that's why I've asked. Mind you, a lot of reviews are very good, saying that they're perfectly adequate so long as you realise it's not going to be hi-fi quality. Connecting the subwoofer makes a huge difference. Apparently.

As a means to copying vinyl & cassettes to CD, is there anything better but just as easy. Think he's got an ION turntable & just can't suss it, think he chops the start of the track. And he uses Audacity. :o(
