4G has been launched in my area, but I have checked the footprint coverage and I dont live within it. I have a iphone4 on O2. If I was to enter the coverage area would my phone pick 4G up.

iPhone 4 doesn't support 4G. See http://www.s21.com/ee.htm for a list of supported phones & tablets.

You would need an EE contract.
Aside from that I'm unsure about specific handsets. Does the iphone4 manual say it is compatible with 4G ?
There is no such thing as an iphone4g, there is an iphone4 or an iphone4s, neither of which are 4g compatible.
Oppps.... misread the question a little :)
