iPad backing up

Just taken iPad to Apple shop to upgrade to iOS 6. This has of course, wiped the iPad. I've tried to sync / back it up but it gets to about 10% and stops. Also without the iPad connected, my PC wont connect to iTunes Store. I've made sure my PCs XP windows firewall has iTunes ticked. Any help greatly appreciated.

Zac, what do you mean it's wiped the iPad, I unfortunately updated mine to the iOS6 and it made little difference apart from denying me a superior map and giving me a sub standard one. I'd take it back to the shop.
