Hi - my brand new laptop (a Toshiba C660) which I have had about 5 days has on three occasions shut down and rebooted without warning whilst I have been browsing the net. It is very annoying! Is this a wrong setting which has something to do with installing updates? I installed Microsoft Security Essentials as soon as I got it connected to the internet. Any help gratefully received!

The first thing to do is to get the machine to tell you why it's restarting.
Control Panel
System
Advanced system settings
In the Startup and recovery section, click Settings
Uncheck the box "automatically restart
Click OK
Click OK

The next time it happens, instead of restarting, it should tell you what the problem is, and wait.
Although as it's only five days old I'd say take it straight back to where you got it from.

(you did remove the pre-installed mcafee anti virus before installing MSE I hope)

ChuckF - I uninstalled the MacAfee, but after I had installed the MSE - do you think that could have caused a problem?
No.

You could try doing a windows update and make sure you select all the optional updates because they are likely to be driver updates, and short of a hardware fault drivers are the most likely thing to be causing it.

But at the end of the day, it's 5 days old, it should be working properly and if it's not then you should take it back.
