Squares showing on Facebook

I hope some techie out there can help me. A couple of days ago I accessed one of the Alt control keys and ended up with part of my page showing squares instead of letters. On chrome they are square, on Mozilla they are squares with two numbers one on top of the others. The names and postings are still coming out as normal letters. Anyone have any idea at all what is going on. HELLLP!!!!Many thanks

I think what you're describing here is a small 2x2 grid showing a hexidecimal value which is telling you that the browser has come across a unicode character it can't display/doesn't know so it's showing the hex code for it instead.

No idea on how to fix this except check in the settings if you can somehow change the character encoding to "automatic" just in case it's been set to something else.

Good news, my lovely daughter helped me sort it out. Turned out that I had accidentally set the language to chinese. Of course, having done so, I couldn't see which button to press to change the settings.... Now all sorted. Thanks for the input though Zeb.
I loved that - sounds just like me. The Chinese bit really made me laugh. I have been without this computer for part of the evening because I clicked on the wrong thingy. It would not let me get into the internet. Finally solved it by turning the whole thing off and watching tv for an hour. When I went back it was cured. Got to admit to swearing at it, perhaps it didn't like my language.
