destop icons

i have a a dell laptop with windows 7. i have lost all my destop icons with no idea how. only way to get them back is by refeshing destop with my external plugged in i have to do this each time i boot up. i do not know how to undo this, geting it back to normal. please can anyone help.

Start by trying the obvious:

Right-click on the desktop.
Go to 'View'
Click on 'Show Desktop Icons'

Done that both and ticks are in the right place
