Connecting Hi Fi system to laptop/ipod

I recently bought a Sony Micro Hi Fi Component System (CMT-G1iP) which has a USB port. I have tried to connect my laptop and my Ipod to this port to play music through the system but it doesn't recognise either of them. Is there a way to solve this?
Thanks

The laptop won't work! to play that through the stereo you'd just need a 3.5mm to 2xRCA audio lead.

The Ipod should work as long as you are using a proper ipod data cable (and not just a charging cable)

Hi. Thanks for your reply and sorry if I am being dim but are you saying that I can connect my laptop to the stereo or that I can't? If I get the lead you suggest, where does it plug into the laptop?
Thanks again
You can't connect it using a USB cable, the USB ports on both the laptop and the stereo are of the same type, in fact if you found a lead with the type A USB on both ends and tried you'd very likely blow up one of the devices.

You can connect it using an audio lead (as I linked to) and if you get the audio lead I linked to you'd connect it to the headphone socket on the laptop and the other end to the aux in sockets on the rear of the stereo.
If Chuck isn't around, you plug the 3.5mm stereo jack into the headphone socket of the laptop and the RCA connections into the line-in sockets on the back of the Sony system
Sorry Chuck, you weren't there when I last looked :-)
A 3.5mm jack for 1p . They dont come cheaper than this one .. Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
And it's not the correct lead...

Thanks to both of you.Very kind.
Not only was the lead suggested by alavahalf not the correct lead but the 1p one has nearly £5 postage on it :)
As far as I know, the USB port on the Hi-Fi is to plug in a memory stick with music on it in MP3 or other format. The Hi-Fi will then play the music from the stick.
A handy way to connect laptops to music systems is through Bluetooth. A Bluetooth audio adaptor is plugged into the hifi audio in and it appears on the computer as a Bluetooth device.

It can give a better quality sound than the audio out on some laptops and is wireless.
