styluses for android tablets

i have a tablet and bought a case for it which came with a free stylus... but the stylus doesnt work on my screen...it only works with fingertips - like a laptop touchpad
is there some other type i can use? ormaybe some setting to make it work?
its a ordinary generic android one

I had one woth a spongey tip for ipad that worked x

I also have one woth a spongey tip, and that works too. The sharp 'pencil' type stylus doesn't seem to work well at all, maybe some touchscreens are design for softtouch.

Is it a capacitive touch screen?

thanks all, ive solved it now... it is indeed capacitive rather than resistive so i have bought a special stylus for it... i didnt realise that some were little more than a plastic stick
