Can a Kindle bought on the US Amazon site work in the UK?

The basic Kindle costs more on Amazon UK than it does on Amazon.com. My brother is visiting from the USA in September. Would it be worth my while to ask him to purchase it over there and bring it over here? Are there any problems that I might encounter in its use?

I've just had a look at the US Amazon site and the Kindle without advertising is $109 - I think that's around £75.
It's £89 from Amazon UK. I strongly recommend you buy it from the UK store because it will be easier to sort any problems out.

Asda is selling the Kobo Touch for £79 and imo is superior to the Kindle

It reads more formats so you can download books from many different sources, including your local library.

And the Kobo has a card reader.
