Hi

I wondered how to speed up my computer & a friend suggested deleting some of the programs on my system (Windows Vista)

I checked my List of Programs to find some that I disn't know I had & hardly ever use!!! How do I know which I can uninstall and which are essential to the Computer itself. I know my way around a computer, but I wouldn't want to break anything, albeit accidentally!!!

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Anything in your Add/Remove Programs can be safely removed.

I don't believe it will speed up your computer though.
Download IO Bit software - Advanced System Care - , which will do all this for you. It's available free from iobit.com. It's safe (I've used it for years) and tidies the hard disk drive for you amongst other things. Useful piece of free software

As hc4361 says, simply uninstalling programs is not going to speed up your computer. Ensuring that only those that are really necessary run at start up will help.
What is essential will depend on how you use your computer and what operating system you are running.
I would start with ensuring that you have sufficient or maximum memory fitted to your computer.
