What is the best ear protection to buy?

I hope you all do not object to this 'ear question but I really need to know which is the best ear protection to buy. I have tried looking at the Which site but they are no good. Also if I do not have any ear defenders to protect me which is the best way to stop noise reaching me?

Foam earplugs which you squash and insert (carefully) into your lug holes.

Active defenders are by far the best IMO

And if you've not got defenders on you carry some foam ear plugs in your pocket (I keep a few sets in the car in case I need them)

Depends on what you are protecting your hearing from plus the environment you are in may dictate the best ear defender for you. I personally use electronic ear defenders. When the noise hits a certain decibel level the protection switches on automatically.
