Nielsen/Net Ratings estimate an 'Active Internet Universe' (ie people who surfed the Net in this month) of 105,170,327 people in April 2002, out of an estimated total of 165 million people having some kind of access.
The worldwide figures are: Active Internet Universe 257,854,751; Current Internet Universe Estimate 447,857,377.

Just want to put my tuppence in... The article in the answer above lists MSN as the most visited site - this is all well and good, except it's a hugely twisted stat; If you use IE, you'll notice that if you mistype a URL, it'll do a search for you and tell you what you might want to go to.. that search is on MSN, and counts as an MSN website hit. So it's largely inflated.
