Best ink for canon printer

Hi,
Need to get some inks for a Canon MP540 printer. It's used mainly for photographs so am only interested in original Canon inks - had probs with compatibles before as well.
I'm sure the originals were CLI-8 but I see now CLI-521 are available as well, a little cheaper than the CLI-8.
What's the difference ?
