E-mail pictures not appearing

The pictures in e-mails sent to me through Outlook Express are not appearing. Instead I get a black lined box with a red "X" in the left hand top corner an some script. I have tried right clicking and selecting "show picture" but nothing happens. This started happening suddenly and all was ok with the pictures until about two weeks ago.
