I just recently bought a 51 Reg Golf 1.6 from a garage.

After a couple of days I got a warning "Emissions Workshop" come up on the dashboard and the car became sluggish. I took it back to the garage who did a diagnostic check which didn't identify a fault so he cleared the warning with his bit of kit.

A couple of days later it happened again. This time I was on a motorway and I noticed that the car then did not go into top gear. I went back to the garage and about 100 yards before getting to the garage the light went out.

The garage have said that they will sort it so I have no issue there and I really like the car. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas what could be the cause?

My girlfriend said that she could smell gas sometimes in the car. Not petrol but gas. I don't have a good sense of smell so I can't tell.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I purchased a 53 plate Golf and not too long after buying it I found that it kept becoming very sluggish and at times I could barely accelorate (sp) at all. It didn't come up with any warning lights but i took it to the dealer and it was found that the lambda sensor needed replacing. As soon as it was replaced the problem was resolved. Maybe that could be something to look in to.

Thank you. I'll mention it. Whatever one of those is?
Not got a clue I'm afraid.Possibly something to do with the fuel. All I know is it fixed the problem and was thankfully still under warranty so I didn't have to pay for it.

It might be nothing to do with that but the problem you have sounds similar.

I took the car to the garage on Friday and he thinks it is a speed sensor. He plugged this thing into my dashboard and came up with this (didn't even open the bonnet). The part is going to be fitted on 30th. However I went home with the car and had a look under the bonnet. I noticed that the I believe the Charcoal Filter cap was not in place. I pushed it on and the problem has not re-occurred. Do you reckon I have fixed it? I borrowed a friends whatsit and plugged it into the dash and it says no errors.
