Add Ons

My computer keeps asking me whether I want to disable my 'add-ons' to speed up browsing but I am new to this and I have no idea what they are. Could I have some advise please.

To be pedantic, it's not your computer that's asking you the question, it's your browser. Since you've not told us which browser you're using, that makes your question rather hard to answer.

However all browsers arrive on your computer (whether pre-loaded by from the manufacturer or because you've installed a browser yourself) in a fairly 'basic' state. Most browsers allow you to 'customise' them by using add-ons. For example, I'm using Firefox, with add-ons that get rid of the adverts on this page, spell-check my posts using a British (rather than American) dictionary and allow me to save Youtube videos to my hard drive with just a couple of clicks.

The add-on which gets rid of adverts actually speeds up my browsing (because the ads don't have to be downloaded to my PC) but some add-ons can slow down browsing (because they use up the PCs processing power). That's why you might need to disable some of them.

Without knowing which browser you're using, and which add-ons you've got installed, it's hard to answer your question. You can see which browser (and which version) you're using by going to 'Help>About . . ' at the top of your screen. It's likely that you can access a list of your add-ons via the Tools menu.
