Windows 7 and swf files

For some reason windows 7 on my new laptop will not recognise .swf files. I have downloaded the player - it says it has installed correctly but clearly hasn't. Any suggestions?

What is "the player"

If you mean the adobe flash player, then that's a browser plugin, not a standalone SWF player.

you either need the adobe flash player projector...

Or one of the other standalone players...

I can't recommend any as I get the standalone player by installing flash CS4, but that's about £600.

I think you've solved it in a roundabout way Chuck - I haven't installed all my usual programs on this new machine yet, so will dig out my trusty macromedia disk.
Glad it pointed you in the correct direction at least :)
Several ways around this, here are a couple more.

Google for VLC Player, install.

Second, right-click an SWF file and select Properties where you can change the default tool used to open this type of file - select your browser and set it to that.
