Replacing Norton Security

I got a years free subscription to Norton when I purchased my laptop.
That year is almost up and I would like to replace it with free security software
recommended by the experts on this site.
I am unsure however whether I uninstall Norton fully and then instal the new software, or download the new security first and then remove Norton?

Would having Norton still installed prevent the download of the new software?

Any advice gratefully received as I do not wish to leave my computer vulnerable.

uninstall Norton first
you'll need to use the removal tool though

Thanks Chuck I was hoping you'd be around.

Are Comodo & Microsoft Security essentials your favoured alternatives?
