Yep tried that but to no avail! Any other suggestions?
You don't mention what make and model of router you have, but every one I've ever seen has had some mechanism to reset its configuration back to the factory defaults, including passwords. Most achieve this by means of a button sunk into the case so that you have to press it with a pin or opened up paper clip.

Bear in mind, though, that this will typically leave your wireless network completely unprotected until you reconfigure it, so don't hang around!
I wouldn't reset the router to factory defaults (which will cause it to lose all your settings)

as above said, you've not mentioned what make of router so it's hard to give exact instructions, but it would be far easier to simply log onto the routers admin pages and either look to see what the password is or change it to something you know.
But the OP is saying that he has forgotten the router's password, so how is he going to log into it...?
I'd be willing to bet they have forgotten the wireless network key, not the password for the router (which will almost certainly be the default password)
Maybe - I was taking the OP literally i.e. when he said 'password' I assumed he meant 'password'... :-)
there is a far bit of ambiguity in the question, but, since I've been on here I've learnt that a lot of OP's don't know the correct terms (through no fault of their own) and you often have to read between the lines a little to actually get to the point of the question.

the router is a Live box from Orange, the password that i dont have is the one required to log on to my network,
on a computer that is able to connect to the internet using the livebox (horrible things BTW) click on the link below (or type it into a browser address bar)

http://192.168.1.1

if it is still at default it will be :- USERNAME = admin PASSWORD = admin

On left hand side click on configuration , In the sub selection click on wireless.

you will need to have a look round in the wireless settings, you should either be able to find a way of viewing what the current key is, or there should be an area to enter a new key that (if you enter a new key you will need to reconnect all wireless devices that use the router)
Question Author
Thanks for the link, still cant find it anywhere tho! Most frustrating!

It shows me my WEP Security key but that is just the number on the router (which i've already tried)

It also tells me that i have WPA or WEP security enabled and the name of the box but no network passwords or anything!
"It also tells me that i have WPA or WEP"

Which one? they require different sorts of keys.

Wireless

Maximum pairing time (minutes) 3 5 10 15 20 30 40 50 60 --
Livebox Name :

WPA or WEP security
WPA security only
WEP security only
No security

WiFi easypairing : Enabled

The box next to WPA or WEP security is ticked
(did I mention I don't like liveboxes!)

They have a wireless pairing button on them, you need to press that to enable the router to accept a new connection, did you press button 1 before trying to connect?
Question Author
No i havent pressed any buttons as yet, (i dont like liveboxes either!) why do i have to do that?
But surely i will still have to know what the password is?
you will still need the network key, but the one you have been trying is probably correct.

Livebox's will reject any new device trying to connect to them for the first time unless the button is pressed. it's meant to be an extra security level (it's actually not a lot of good at all security wise)
Question Author
Thankyou very much indeed, just pressed the no 1 button and put in the number on the liverbox and i'm on!

Happy days, thanks again!
The default login on most Orange routers is just "admin"
The default network key on Orange routers is on the bottom of router, and will be shown under "pre-shared key" or "network key" in router settings/wireless network/encryption & authentication. If this doesn't work, it has been changed. Try all passwords you can think of.
Reboot router first to see if can fix that way. If you are connecting wirelessly, disable wireless temporarily, remove all the networks stored in the wireless advanced settings, and reboot. Go back into router and change name slightly and store. Then change back to what it was previously. Try to reconnect with wireless again after re-enabling. Obviously need a working proper key for this. If you constantly get an "obtaining address" in the wireless connection window, that is probably a duff key.
