This has happened twice in the last few days.

Get in to find answering machine light flashing. The message is just "Please hang up and try again" in the woman's voice from BT (as though I had tried to dial out and had a number not recognised). When I dial 1471 it says the caller with held the number.

How come I am getting this message when somebody telephoned me?

I have my computer on standby and I have broadband.

If there a message on BT answerfone service for your number, they ring you to clear it.....try 1571 to receive the message.
Or is it possible that your answering machine is having an affair (possibly with a washing machine)?
Someone has tried to ring you with an automated sales call. Just delete it.
