On messenger I get ads in the form of one of my contacts logging in and telling me to go to a not nice site but the contact is offline when you read what they say.
I suspect a trojan but my virus checker is ok
I use AVG

Viruses, trojans, browser hijacker are all different beasts. Try downloading Lavasoft AdAware free and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Install them, get the latest updates, then scan with AdAware first, and Malwarebytes after that
Oh yes, and if it is always the same friend on messenger sending the links, block them from messenger then email them and get them to change their password and run checks for viruses, trojans and other nasties, and don't unblock them until they have. It is possible that they have given away their login and passord and that someone else is using their id to send the links to everyone on their friends list.
This isn't due to a virus but one of your contacts has been stupid enough to pass on their login and password details to spammers. It's called SPIMMING and is growing, especially among younger more gullible users.

Advise them to change their password when you next see them.
